Garmin BNC Connector GPS Notch Filter

August 7, 2024

You would think the manufacturer could at least print a part number on the physical part, there is plenty of room, nope. Its just tossed into a bag with a couple part numbers on the bag, including the garmin part number.

Interference from my dual Narco MK12E NavComms on my Maule during a GDL-82 ADS-B ground test completely obliterated the satellite signal when keying the transmitters. The installation manual suggested using this notch filter near the comm radio and ELT. This one was significantly cheaper than the TED version also available from Spruce, but only one was in stock at the time so I ordered a TED version as well. The Garmin version is manufactured by Telegartner in Germany, and worked OK on my Comm1 radio but not on Comm2. I was thrilled to find that the TED unit worked perfectly on Comm2, whose antenna is actually farther away from the GA35 gps antenna (5 feet vs. 3 feet). Go figure. Interestingly, this problem was completely independent of my ELT. Thats fortunate because its got an internally connected whip antenna that would not accept a notch filter. Garmin / Telegartner lost a star since it got outperformed by the TED on my Comm 2, but still got a 4 star rating cause it saved me about 90 bucks. PAPR validation flight was perfect.
