Piper Door Seal

Works great for PA28-161

Bought this for my 1980 Piper PA28-161. Dont bother trying to install with door on the plane. Unhook the door slide assembly, then remove the two cotter pins and tap the pins out to remove the door. I used a flat blade screw driver to root up the old seal. Next I tried using goof off and a razor blade to remove the old adhesive. This proved to be futile, so I stuck a round 2 wire wheel brush in my drill and went around the entire door with it. It knocked it off pretty good. Then you can hit it with the solvent of choice to clean it up. I think my plane had the original gasket, and Im telling you that adhesive is no joke!! For installation I bought 3M black weatherstrip adhesive at AutoZone for $7. Also have pack of close pins handy. Apply the glue thin, about the width of the seal, and work in sections about 6 to 8 inches long. It dries really quick. Always make sure your seam is at the bottom of the door! I like to super glue the two ends together where they meet. You can hardly tell theres even a seam. This gasket works good and does make the door a little harder to shut. Plan for 6 hours of labor just in case

Just finished install on my 1976 Pa-28 235. I cleaned ALL the old seal off and primed and painted the inside of the door. I used 3M weatherstrip adhesive which is a flexible contact cement. This seal is exactlly like the more expensive without the tape, but you want to GLUE this on, following the instructions on the adhesive tube. Overall I recommend this seal.

Installed this on my Piper Warrior and was very happy with the results. Remove the door and rest on a soft surface . I used a Harbor Freight Work Stand #38778. It allows the shape of the door to be properly supported without fear of dropping or rocking around. Remove/ clean off any old seal and and glue and prep the surface by wiping with acetone or MEK. The surface must be absolutely clean and clear of old seal or sealant or you will be disappointed. The door seal is installed on the door not the airframe. Spread the adhesive on the door flange, with the bulb lightly touching the door and the rubber flap away from the door body. You have 25 feet to work with. Do not pre-cut a length unless you add about 12 inches to the pre-cut piece to allow for fitment. Start in the middle of the bottom of the door and work your way around the front, the top, the rear of the door and the bottom. I previously purchased about 100 clothes pins and used them to secure the door seal to the door and let it sit for a few days to ensure proper drying. After removing the clothes pins the seal will slowly return to its original shape.

I called the manufacturer, J & M Aircraft Supply Inc, to inquire about the lack of instructions and he said this P seal is intended for aft cargo door applications on Piper aircraft, not the forward entry door. He recommended quarter round on the forward entry door. Since it was marketed as Piper door seal on Spruce its a little ambiguous.
