Statistics show that the primary causes of engine failure in light aircraft are carburetor icing and spark plug fouling. Mid-Continent Instruments and Avionics’ B-5 Temperature Probe and MD11 Gauge accurately measure internal carburetor temperatures, giving the pilot precise engine information during all phases of flight. Use of this system can eliminate carburetor icing, reduce spark plug fouling, extend engine life and increase range and power to help maximize fuel economy. Other probes that utilize a simple indicator light cannot offer precise temperature information. They disrupt fuel flow or don’t fit inside the carburetor to sense air temperature at the throttle valve. Designed for use with most Marvel-Schebler and Bendix float-type carburetors, the B-5 is the only probe that installs at the throttle valve — the critical icing point in fuel induction systems. The optimum internal temperature for light aircraft carburetors is 5°C, and spark plug manufacturers state that fuel is properly volatilized at 5°C to prevent plug fouling. Used with the MD11 Gauge, the B-5 Probe allows pilots to monitor and control carburetor heating to within 1°C for maximum safety and engine efficiency. Used in many piston-powered aircraft, this carb temperature indicator warns of potential carburetor icing. |
