Q: What is the accessory light plate for?

These are not required for the OR550 but the OR550 can fit into any of these light plates.

Q: How many lumens for the WHELEN ORION™ 550 WHITE TAIL POSITION / ANTI-COLLISION LED LIGHT?

Per Whelen: We do not have a lumens spec, the output for the 01-0772070V01 is to meet the TSO-C96a Class II anti-collision light spec which is 400 Effective Candle Power and the Navigation light is rated at a TSO-C30c requirements for a white tail navigation light.

Q: Any difference in lumen output over the Orion 500? Power draw is identical, but a side by side look indicated more LEDS on the 550.

The power draw is identical to the ORION 500 Series. The main difference is the overall size of this light and that it has a much shallower heat sync in the back so it can fit all of the legacy products footprint.

Q: Is the Whelen Orion 550 FAA TSO approved for use in certified aircraft?

Yes, this light is FAA TSO Approved.

Q: Will this Orion 550 tail position light fit on a Mooney M20J tail? I cannot see any dimensions of the base plate.

Yes the Orion 550 will fit onto a Mooney M20J. We have added the drawing to the Documents section of the web page for download and review.

Q: Is there a Whelen Orion 550 light in 24v option?

This only comes in 14v at this time. Whelen recommends the Orion 500 for a 24/28v application.

Q: What does Whelen recommend for supply cable...shielded multiconductor? Or plain single conductor wire? Gauge? Do they offer a wiring harness kit?

No special cable needed. Simple 18 awg wire is all that is required.

Q: Does the orientation matter with the Orion 550, i.e. screw pattern vertical vs. horizontal?

The orientation does matter on the 11-18745. This is designed to be mounted in a vertical orientation with the screw holes located at 12 O'clock and 6 O'clock.

Q: Can this be used in my 2021 tesla as signal light?

We have no data supporting this items use in automotive applications. It is intended for aircraft install.

Q: Does this Tail Position LED have a separate control or do you have to leave the position lights on for the Strobe to be active?

There are separate power wires for the navigation and anti-collision lights, so it could be wired separately.
