The Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker is an aerial refueling tanker aircraft that has been in service with the United States Air Force (USAF) since 1957. This unique asset greatly enhances the Air Forces capability to accomplish its primary missions of Global Reach and Global Power. The KC-135 also provides aerial refueling support to the Navy, Marine Corps and other allied nations. Additionally, it is capable of transporting litter and ambulatory patients during aeromedical evacuations. The Stratotanker first flew on August 17, 1956. It is characterized by four turbofans mounted under 35 degree swept wings, a horizontal stabilizer mounted on the fuselage and a hi-frequency radio antenna protruding forward from the top of the vertical stabilizer. Depending on fuel storage configuration, the aircraft can carry up to 83,000 pounds of cargo. The KC-135R is a re-engined version that can offload 50 percent more fuel, is 25 percent more fuel efficient, costs 25 percent less to operate and is 96 percent quieter than the original variant. The last KC-135 was delivered to the USAF in 1965. Aside from its primary role as an inflight aircraft refueler, the KC-135 has assisted in several research projects at the NASA Dryden Flight Research Center at Edwards Air Force Base, California. NASA also has operated several KC-135 aircraft, without the tanker equipment installed, as the Vomit Comet zero-gravity simulator aircraft. |
