Looks good, easy install, able to use existing strobe wiring and remove the strobe power supply. Brighter too.

Direct replacement for my older wingtip lights on my 65 Comanche. These enabled me to remove the strobe power supplies in the wingtip shaving off 2.5 lbs of weight. They look sharp and are really bright. The price is high but that’s the case with aviation and quality products. This was a great project to give my plane a facelift and reduce electrical load. Install time if just removing the old one and the old strobe power supply was about an hour a side. I ran a sync wire from wing tip to wing tip that added another couple hours but it was worth it.

Great pruduct, highly reccomend. Fits same footprint and nutplate pattern of my old Whelen strobe/nav light. Got rid of old high-voltage stobe power supply, saving 1.1lbs per wing. Only slight issue was the new strobe baseplate is flat, whereas the old strobe had a slight cavity so it would sit against the slight curvature if my wingtip. Solved by fabricating gasket from 1/8 foam material, Could probably also have just used proseal under baseplate too.

Q&A

Please note, Aircraft Spruce's personnel are not certified aircraft mechanics and can only provide general support and ideas, which should not be relied upon or implemented in lieu of consulting an A&P or other qualified technician. Aircraft Spruce assumes no responsibility or liability for any issue or problem which may arise from any repair, modification or other work done from this knowledge base. Any product eligibility information provided here is based on general application guides and we recommend always referring to your specific aircraft parts manual, the parts manufacturer or consulting with a qualified mechanic.

Q: Does this come with all mounting hardware/brackets for a Cessna 172M ? My mechanic seemed to think something else was required, but I have not seen any other bracket options.

Some Cessnas require a wingtip adapter. You will need to verify with your A&P to determine if your aircraft requires one. Example adapter part number is 11-18768.

Q: Do you sell appropriate shielded wiring to install in my Cessna wings with connectors for theses Orion 650 strobes/Nav?

Part number 11-18776 would work. It is 20awg 4 conductor shielded wire.

Q: What strobe is brightest, the Orion 650 or the 650 E?

The Orion 650E outputs 400 effective candela.

650E is only for embedded wingtip designs meaning that they depend on the aircraft's exterior lens to keep them protected.

The Orion 650 outputs 150 effective candela.
