Used it on 7 hour trip. Worked perfectly including XM music all the way.
Garmin GDL 51 GPS Sxm Weather And Attitude
A must have piece of equipment in the cockpit. Easy to configure and highly valuable weather data. It is too bad that the Canadian website showed a SiriusXM promo as it only applies to US subscribers.
Product worked great, even when Sirius could not send data it connected to Foreflight immediately
Garmin GDL 51 GPS Sxm Weather And Attitude
XM weather works good on the ground before takeoff. I never listen to music in an aircraft. I havent tried the attitude function yet but I expect it will work just fine.
Easy set up and works well with Foreflight. Love it.
Garmin GDL 51 unit gives me access to XM weather, which is superior to ADS-B wx. If Garmin offered an external antenna for the GPS, I would give it 5-stars.

I finally got it working. Connecting with Sirius XM was challenging due to connectivity issues with Sirius XM. There were no issues with the GDL51because once
Garmin GDL 51 GPS Sxm Weather And Attitude
Better than any other portable SiriusXM weather option for the cockpit: light, ridiculously-long battery life, easy to use, etc. Its surprisingly heavy, probably because its mostly battery the weight, combined with its rubber bottom, means that it doesnt slide around on the dash, even in turbulence. The one caveat is that the bluetooth connectivity is still a little flaky, at least with Android devices. It drops in and out a lot, disconnects devices entirely sometimes, and forgets its auto-reconnect options. By comparison, the bluetooth link between my panel-mounted Garmin GTX 345 transponder and the same Android devices is rock solid (so the problem is probably not the Android devices). Hoping this gets fixed in a future system-software release.
Gdl51 works great except one problem. One of the main readons i purchased it was for the surface anaylis. The fronts and isobars . If you have,Garmin Pilot , it is not set up for the analyst chart. I would have kept my gdl39 if i had known and saved the money

The Garmin GDL 51 / 51R is a Sirius XM receiver only. It does not also receive ADS-B information. For that you will need to order the Garmin GDL 52 / 52R which will receive both Sirius XM and ADS-B.
The GDL 51 portable unit includes internal GPS and SiriusXM antennas. You do have the option of using external antennas if so desired.
Garmin states that this is for use with the Garmin Pilot App, other Garmin Portable systems, and ForeFlight only.
Garmin pilot app is the only interface available for the device to listen to music.
No, the GDL 51 does not receive ADS-B. It only receives GPS and SiriusXM. For ADS-B in signal, see the GDL 50 or GDL 52.
We would recommend the GDL 52 for operation of both at once.
Yes it can be powered via usb.
The GA 25 remote antenna is listed as an appropriate antenna on Garmins website. Model # 010-10702-00 | pn 11-07281
