This kit provides standard aircraft parts acceptable under 14 CFR §21.9 for a FAA certificated mechanic to fabricate and install a fused, 2-wire harness for connecting an aviation-specific BatteryMINDer® brand of low-current, continuous-duty, maintenance-type battery charger. The finished harness typically has ring terminals attached to the battery relay connecting to a Anderson SB50 polarized plug at the opposite end by up to 6 feet of MIL-spec unshielded 16-gauge aircraft wire, with a 10-amp in-line fuse. The SB50 plus is encased in a 670-420 SB50 Handle Kit which provides a rugged hand grip. An insulating dust cover protects the plug when not connected to the charger. Anti-chafe sleeving is included.
This kit is eligible for installation by a licensed mechanic as a minor alteration under 14 CFR §1.1 and §21.93(a) as it has “no appreciable effect on the weight, balance, structural strength, reliability, operational characteristics, or other characteristics affecting the airworthiness” of the aircraft. No STC, Form 337 submittal or FSDO field approval is required per FAA Order 8900.1 Figure 4-67. A §43.9 airframe logbook entry is sufficient to document this alteration and return the aircraft to service. Also includes a short harness to adapt the charger’s SAE output connector to a mating Anderson SB50 plug. This harness is connected to and remains with the charger. It is not installed on the aircraft. |

The BatteryMinder was useful immediately and I installed the airframe interface plug kit on an SR22 G3 so the battery could be managed without removing the cowling. So far everything operates as advertised.
BatteryMINDer Airframe Interface Kit For FAA-Certified Aircraft
Great set to install on your airplane it keep batteries charged

The BatteryMinder is a great product and came highly recommended. And of course, if you want a quality product, Aircraft Spruce is your one-stop company for just that - quality!
BatteryMINDer Airframe Interface Kit For FAA-Certified Aircraft
The main connection piece in this kit was found to be cracked by my mechanic AFTER he had installed the components that go inside the airplane and are hooked to the battery. I called Aircraft Spruce to get a replacement. The kind lady who doesn’t understand how much A&P’s charge, told me I would have to send the “already installed” kit back for a refund or order a total new one and replace the one damaged part that way. Totally unbelievable. I am more than incredulous.

Always functions properly

I bought this a long time ago, and finally installed it a few months ago. Cessna 182L with battery in tail. Mounted the plug-in connector up on the ledge above the divider panel , reachable via baggage door, and visible through rear window. Single-hand operation for plug and unplug. I have an older BatteryMinder 14v system and had the temperature terminal ring sensor that the newer systems don’t have. I called BatteryMinder engineer, and the friendly guy said it can be just put inside the cabin dangling wherever. Doesn’t change operating functions or results. The wires can be gently closed in the door, and I have a mouse-confounding funnel on the wire from the Minder box that sits outside the hangared aircraft.
Great product. Very helpful for aircraft that sit for long periods.

For experimental aircraft, the answer is yes. For certified aircraft, there are basically two requirements to be legal. The materials from which the harness is fabricated must be aviation grade, conforming to some recognized quality standard, such as military specifications. The installation on a certified aircraft also requires approval. So long as the installation remains within the FAA’s definition of a minor alteration, any licensed mechanic has the authority to fabricate, install, and approve the installation for return-to-service with a airframe maintenance logbook entry. Our Model BM-AIK2 provides a convenient kit of aviation parts from which your mechanic can easily fabricate, install and approve a charger connection.
The instructions that come with our BM-AIK Airframe Interface Kit are generic and will guide the installation on most any aircraft. (see the Documents tab) We also offer a growing list of illustrated installation examples that can be downloaded to show exactly how to install the kit on particular aircraft types.
The hole diameters are .170 so an 8-32 screw would work.
The kit is the BM-AIK2.
For full functionality, it is optimum in that situation to use 2 Battery Minders and 2 Interface Kits. Using only one Minder on 2 batteries, you would lose features such as de-sulfating and certain diagnostics--and all it essentially would be able to do is topping off.
It will work with both voltages.
Per the manufacturer: No, the FAA is the sole governing authority on modifications of certified aircraft. The BM-AIK kits have been reviewed by FAA and industry personnel, who agree that its installation does not rise to the level of a major alteration to the aircraft. Only a major alteration, as defined by federal aviation regulations, requires an STC, or FSDO field approval, and filing an FAA form 337 to document the change. It is not the decision of the airframe manufacturer, or type certificate holder. Because it is NOT a major alteration, it is a MINOR alteration, which is within the authority of the installing mechanic to sign off with a simple maintenance log entry.
The S5 batteryminder is for the Concorde batteries. The difference between them is the way that is maintains and charges the battery per the battery manufacturers specifications.
