10-4894-1 Rebuilt Marvel Schebler Carb

February 17, 2022

Rebuilt by Marvel Schebler to new tolerances. I actually called MS before placing my order and spoke with them about the differences between Overhauled & Rebuilt. I elected to spend the extra on the Rebuilt carburetor and I am very happy with it.

So far, so good. No leaks, engine starts good. Was surprised to learn that the studs for mounting carb heat box, do not come with the rebuilt carburetor. Information was that those studs are an airframe part. The only place the studs are illustrated is in the Engine IPC and they are attached to the carburetor, with a P/N. Not a problem. Removed studs from removed carburetor for use on this s/n. All good!

The rebuilt carburetor was promptly received and included gaskets. Most importantly the rebuilt carburetor performed perfectly. It solved a long term issue with the previous carburetor as verified by a recently installed engine monitor. Even though my old carburetor had been rebuilt some time ago it never did perform as well as expected. Purchasing an exchange carburetor with all the current updates and flow tested was a bargain. Core charge has already been returned.

Q: What is the difference between Rebuilt and Overhauled carburetors? Is the work done by Marvel-Schebler or someone else?

Rebuilt units are torn down, and all parts are replaced to new spec. An overhauled unit is the unit torn down and only certain parts, not all, are replaced, but still inspected to new unit specs. The work is done by Marvel-Schebler.

Q: Will these overhauled carburetors come standard with a new EASA Form 1 or a USA Yellow Tag?

Per the supplier: They will be shipped with an 8130 form which will include the EASA number on it.

Q: Are the rebuilt and overhauled Marvel-Schebler carburetors furnished with gaskets?

Per the supplier: Rebuilt and overhauled MSA carburetors are supplied with the engine side mounting gasket. When the air box mounting gaskets are available, we include them. However, they are not always included.

Q: I see there is a $600 core fee. What is the process to return the core and how long does it take to get the $600 credited back once I do?

When we receive a core, our returns department does a visual of the unit to make sure the unit is complete, and if it is, we credit the core back to the customer. Generally from the time we issue credit and the amount is funded back to the customers bank account is 5-7 days. The credit memo will have a note that states we are crediting the core amount, under the assumption the unit is in overhaul-able condition. Once the manufacturer receives the unit, it is fully dis-assembled and inspected. If a structural part of the unit is broken, housing, bowl, etc., the replacement cost will be billed to the customer at that time.

Q: Is the warranty the same as direct from Marvel-Schebler: 2 years, 1,000 hours?

Yes, they are actually overhauled by Marvel and marketed as Tempest carb.

Q: Does the return core need to be the same as the one ordered? In other words if I order a Marvel-Schedler MA-4SPA 10-5009 can I return a 10-5135.

Yes that would be an acceptable core.

Q: Does the rebuilt carbs include an 8130 or i must order the form at extra cost?

All MSA carbs come with a domestic 8130-3 included. Export 8130, if required, must be requested at checkout.

Q: What is the difference between rebuilt and overhaul? What is getting replaced and what is not?

Overhauled units may have parts remain that meet tolerances, and Rebuilt units have all replaceable parts replaced with new, no matter if they are in tolerance.

Q: Is there a TBO on carburetors?

The recommended TBO is 10 calendar years or at the TBO of the engine on which the carburetor is installed.

Q: What does the -1 at end of part number refer to? My application chart calls for 10-4894. Will the 10-4894-1 be the correct part?

I believe the -1 is added because its overhauled by Tempest. If you need a 10-4894 carb then the 10-4894-1 would be correct.
