FLYWEIGHTTM STARTERS
The product synonymous with the Sky-Tec name, The Original Flyweight™ provides unmatched value in Lycomingoming replacement starters. These are our most popular starter models (Models PM & LS). They feature permanent magnet motors unmatched value, reliable performance, high-torque, a ten pound weight savings over stock starters and twice the spin of old, heavyweight OEM starters resulting in faster and easier engine starts - especially improving hot engine start performance.

Note: The LS Solenoid is at the 2:30 position and the PM Solenoid is at the 7:30 position when viewed from the front.

Reviews

First off, Hartzell who makes the Sky-Tec starter is a phenomenal company with outstanding, over the top customer service. That said, the 122-12LS starter model does not appear to be a good choice for a Velocity canard/pusher aircraft. We have had the same problem with two new 122-12LS starters we had. The smaller format and armature of the 122-12LS appears to not tolerate heat very well. The engine on a Velocity and other rear propeller aircraft (e.g., Long-EZ) run much warmer than front prop installations such as an RV. The increased radiant heat appears to affect this particular starter negatively resulting in it not being able to start the engine after flight. The 122-12LS may work fine on a front propeller aircraft but it appears to not do well on a pusher aircraft with its higher temperatures. In the end. Hartzell replaced our starter with a 122-NL which is working perfectly. Great company...Im a customer for life.

The 149-12LS starter fits a Mooney M20F Executive with a fuel injected Lycoming IO360A1A engine. The fit guide lists a starter that is too long and will not fit. I called sky tech and found out. Check the installation drawing and measure before you buy.

Fantastic starters! My first set lasted over 2000 hours worth no issues. Very lite and they spin fast and smooth!

My starter failed after 1400 hours on my Cessna T206H. Purchased this replacement and it just worked as it should. 3 year warranty. Would recomend.

Q&A

Please note, Aircraft Spruce's personnel are not certified aircraft mechanics and can only provide general support and ideas, which should not be relied upon or implemented in lieu of consulting an A&P or other qualified technician. Aircraft Spruce assumes no responsibility or liability for any issue or problem which may arise from any repair, modification or other work done from this knowledge base. Any product eligibility information provided here is based on general application guides and we recommend always referring to your specific aircraft parts manual, the parts manufacturer or consulting with a qualified mechanic.

Q: When the specifications/features lists the starter as being PMA, what does this acronym mean?

Parts Manufacturer Approval (PMA) is an approval granted by the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to a manufacturer of aircraft parts. Production approval will be granted when the FAA is satisfied that the system will not permit parts to leave the system until the parts have been verified to meet the requirements of the approved design, and the system otherwise meets the requirements of the FAA quality system regulations

Q: I have a worn out Sky-Tec 149-12LS, is there core re-reimbursement?

Yes, these are now subject to core exchange.

Q: What is the current draw of the 149-12LS?

125-220A @ 11V.

Q: is an STC required to install on a Mooney? Does it come included with the starter?

This is covered by STC SE00218NY. The STC covers the engine, not the airframe. The paperwork is not in the box but it can be downloaded from Sky-Tec website.

Q: What is the thread pitch of the three posts on the 149-12LS starter?

The power terminal is M6 X 1.0MM and the two S terminals are M8 X 1.25MM.

Q: What is the difference in the 149-12LS and the 149-12XLT?

They are essentially the same starter but the XLT is lighter. 7.8 lbs vs 6.5 lbs.
