Restoring your shimmy damper effectiveness One of the most neglected components on Piper aircraft is the shimmy damper. The shimmy damper aids nose wheel steering by reducing the shimmy of the nose wheel during takeoff and landing, and during high-speed taxiing. Even minor shimmying can lead to serious damage to the nose gear and engine mount and affect the airworthiness of the aircraft. The shimmy damper is a sealed unit that, until now, could not be serviced and required costly replacement. The STC and accompanying servicing kit allows your existing MAECO shimmy damper to be modified and serviced, restoring the shimmy damper to like-new condition and enabling it to perform as originally designed! The servicing kit installs in less than an hour by any A&P mechanic. Once modified, if the shimmy damper ever needs servicing again, the owner can service it with hydraulic fluid. Our Shimmy Damper STC Kit is for the MAECO Shimmy Damper only and is non-refundable. Please check your shimmy damper for proper operation before ordering as there are many issues, other than a dry/empty shimmy damper, which can cause a shimmy in the nose gear. Please see the Piper MAECO Inspection Guide to help you determine if you need the servicing kit before ordering. Servicing kit includes: FAA authorization to modify present shimmy dampener, drill with stop special servicing screw which retains hydraulic fluid, instructions
The kit works with MAECO shimmy dampeners only. It will not work with the PS series.
Yes, it does.
No, the PA22 is not listed on the application guide.
The STC allows you to drill a hole for refilling the hydraulic fluid. There are no o-rings or seals inside the MAECO dampener, so nothing has to be replaced inside. Once the hole is drilled and the dampener is filled with fluid we supply a screw with a seal to close up the hole and then it is serviceable from there on out.
