The FAA-PMA approved SlickSTART™ magneto booster system integrates solid state electronics with conventional ignition hardware to deliver optimum spark energy for improved engine starting under all operating conditions. SlickSTART™ delivers over 400% more spark energy during start than conventional impulse coupled or retard breaker systems. This added energy enables the magnetos to fire partially fouled spark plugs, ignite less than optimum fuel mixtures, improve hot engine restarts, and improve starting performance during extreme cold weather operations.SlickSTART™ is designed to replace all TCM/Bendix starting vibrators used in conjunction with Slick Aircraft Products magnetos. SlickSTART™ is also approved for use with Slick impulse coupled magnetos to enhance engine starting performance.

SlickSTART™ is not approved for installation on any airframe equipped with TCM/Bendix D-2000*, or D-3000* series impulse coupled or retard breaker magnetos.

SlickSTART™ SS1001 is approved for use with Slick impulse coupled magnetos and retard breaker mags to enhance engine starting performance.

This is the second Surestart I have had to replace in my Piper Comanche 260 in the past two years. It had only 300hrs on the box. Another downside, beside the price, is you have to buy the whole conversion kit instead of just buying the box. My complaint at Oshkosh 22 fell on deaf ears.

It’s really 4.5 stars because the instructions were a little tricky since we were installing the 002 model on a Bendix mag. We figured it out and confirmed with a quick call to tech support. Now the stubborn IO360A1A starts within a couple blades hot or cold. Highly recommended along with fine wire plugs as well.

I have been having hot start issues from day 1 since installing a new Lycoming IO360M1B in my RV-7A. I tried every start procedure imaginable. It killed a starter and two batteries. The airplane was completely unreliable once you tried a hot start. After installing the Slick Start the engine starts on the third blade, hot or cold! Great product. I wish I had installed it sooner. Now my engine starts like it is supposed to.

I have a 2015 Cessna 182T with an injected Lycoming 540. Over the course of a weekend my engine became impossible to start, so I had both mags replaced and fine wire plugs installed, and while the cowling was off I asked my mechanic to install one of these. The engine starts better than it did when it was new. Usually 2nd or 3rd blade after being parked in a 45 degree hangar. Haven’t had the opportunity to try a hot start on a hot day with it. After thorough research and experience with this product my opinion is that it’s not a substitute for proper magneto maintenance and the only spark plugs anyone should ever use in an airplane engine are tempest fine wires, but it does seem to make the engine easier to start and more forgiving with regard to under prime and over prime, so as far as I’m concerned a good purchase and if it prevents me from being stuck some place or burning out the starter or destroying the battery even one time it’s worth the money by far.

Q: Will slick start also improve ignition while the engine is running at cruise power or is it only helpful during start?

Per the supplier: Start only, then it is along for the ride.

Q: Regarding the Slick Start: Do you need one or two units for twin engine aircraft?

One is needed per engine.

Q: Is this STC'ed how do you know which aircraft it is approved for? Is it approved for the C182S?

It is STC'd to be used on a Cessna 182S using Slick magnetos. Refer to Slick service letter SL2-96 for complete list of approvals.

Q: What is the time estimate to install a SlickSTART? Is the installation simply a matter of adding the SlickSTART between the start switch and the ignition-coupled mag?

The estimated time to install a SS1001 is approx. 4 hrs. The installation is simple and basically involves mounting the unit to the firewall and attaching wires to the starter solenoid, ground and the left magneto. See the PDF file in the Documents section for complete installation instructions.
