As a previous reviewer stated, it charges at 14.x volts, but that is normal and acceptable. If it charged at 12.x volts, your battery would never charge. I installed an externally regulated one in my 1966 Cherokee 140 and it has flown trouble free for many hundreds of hours. Sold that plane and installed the experimental, internally regulated version on my Vans RV-7A. It has been trouble free for 160+ hours. I have read of a few that had wires back out of the connector at the back but proper installation and wire support should avoid that from happening. Do your homework on the belt size required before purchasing. It comes with the most common size.
I had mistakenly ordered the wrong alternator and discussed it with a service representative. She advised me that I could return the incorrect one and they would send me the correct one. All of that was fine and the new alternator works great BUT I returned the incorrect on on the RMA and the company received it almost two weeks ago and I still have not received the credit. So, Plane Power alternator is 5 stars, customer service is about 2 stars.
I bought the original 60 amp Plane Power over a decade ago and it’s given me good service. Recently it failed so I replaced it with the same model. Deducted a star because a wire in the stator failed but if the new one lasts as long I’ll be happy.
Very nice quality part, everything bolted up and fit very nice. I like that all new hardware is included. As above mentioned the belt is designed for the larger diameter pulley. My only criticism, is that it did not include an install manual. I had to call to get a copy. Its not even on their website for this particular model. The only paperwork at all included was the test run sheet. Ive had good luck with Plane Power, and have an STC version on my personal plane.
Bearing failed after 18 months of service, disappointing.
AL12-EI60/B Hartzell Plane Power Alternator
Pretty easy to install, I liked having the peace of mind of over-voltage crowbar protection. My previous automotive alternator had been installed and working for nearly 20 years so it was time to replace it. The Plane Power replacement only lasted slightly over 3 years. Will be going with a different brand in the future.
Alternator looks great, mount and screws are supplied. But the following is really nasty: - The tension arm supplied does not fit (to short) IO-320 - No drawings available for the supplied tension arm - No drawing available for the additional available tension arms Hartzell itself has no information about the dimension of the tension arms on their home page. Need to investigate and organize these drawings to checkout the correct one , then order again one, shipping oversea will cost a fortune. This just because all parts where not well documented. This is not a good service.
Charges at 14.7v contacted Plane Power support, no reply. Changed internal regulator with new unit, no change in high voltage.
