Overview

Note: For use with the Garmin Pilot App, other Garmin Portable systems, and ForeFlight only. Certified unit must be used in conjunction with a G3X Certified system.

Note 2: GDL 50 ADS-B WILL work for traffic internationally on the second frequency, 1090ES. These receivers (all ADS-B receivers) will NOT receive FIS-B weather products outside the USA as that is a USA only system. They will not receive traffic on frequency 978 outside the USA but WILL work internationally on frequency 1090ES.

  • ADS-B “dual-link” traffic with TargetTrend™ and TerminalTraffic™ technology3
  • Wireless connectivity for display on select mobile device apps and Garmin portables
  • Remote-box ADS-B “In” solution for G3X Touch flight displays
  • Provides GPS position data, backup attitudeand more For pilots flying with our G3X Touch glass display systems, the compact GDL 50R remote-mount receiver brings an array of safety-enhancing features to the cockpit. It connects your flight displays with subscription-free graphical weather content and advanced dual-band traffic services being continuously uplinked through the U.S. ADS-B network. Plus, you can also use our Connext wireless connectivity to stream this information onto multiple Garmin aviation portables (including aera® 660, aera 796 or aera 795 series) as well as iPad® tablets and mobile devices with the Garmin Pilot™ app.

Works with a Variety of Devices
Providing multiple display outputs and viewing options, GDL 50R works not only with your G3X Touch avionics, but it can also communicate simultaneously with the Garmin Pilot app running on your compatible iPad tablet or mobile devices². Likewise, if you fly with an aera 660, 796 or 795 series aviation portable, the receiver’s data links can also be accessed (via wired or wireless connection) with these products as well. In fact, GDL 50R is able to support up to 2 Connext wireless connections for your devices while simultaneously providing wired connections for 2 other devices.

    Track Aviation Weather
Featuring ADS-B “In” datalink technology, the GDL 50R receiver allows reception of subscription-free Flight Information Service-Broadcast (FIS-B) weather information in the U.S. With this, your compatible devices² can display animated graphical weather plus METARs, TAFs, winds and temperatures aloft, PIREPs, NOTAMs and other features linked from ADS-B. And to help you maintain the most current weather picture, your GDL 50R receiver can queue the ADS-B weather data while your display device is sleeping or turned off, so it automatically updates when you turn the screen back on.

For airport operations, TerminalTraffic technology (a part of the comprehensive Garmin suite of Terminal Safety Solutions) enables ADS-B equipped surface targets to be displayed on your device’s SafeTaxi® diagram, so you can see what’s happening with traffic on busy runways and taxiways. ADS-B equipped aircraft in flight are easily distinguished from ground vehicles and taxiing aircraft, which are displayed using distinct colors and symbols. Thus, TerminalTraffic provides a clear, real-time overview of on-surface activity in the airport environment.

    Spot Potential Traffic Threats
To aid in situational awareness, GDL 50R can also receive ADS-B position reports directly from other aircraft in your vicinity. In the U.S., 2 frequencies (978 UAT and 1090 ES) are approved by the FAA for ADS-B broadcasts, so the GDL 50R offers access to both frequencies. This allows you to see the most comprehensive view of all ADS-B “Out” equipped targets in your vicinity. Your compatible display³ will alert you by announcing traffic targets both audibly and visually. Spoken audio alerts announce “Traffic, Traffic” to get you looking right away.

    View Enhanced Traffic Features
To further extend your display’s traffic monitoring capability (on compatible displays), the GDL 50R receiver also allows access to our TargetTrend relative motion tracking technology. This feature gives you a faster, more intuitive way to judge the direction and closure rate of intruding targets relative to your aircraft’s position. So, rather than a fixed “snapshot” of the traffic situation, TargetTrend provides a more dynamic “velocity-based” display that shows which aircraft trajectories are most likely to converge with your own. For example, if traffic is ahead of you and traveling along the same track but at a slower rate, the motion vector would point opposite of its indicated direction of flight to show you are overtaking the traffic. The result — you’re able to make faster, better target avoidance decisions.

Built-in GPS and Attitude Sensors for SVX™ Display
In addition to its ADS-B weather and traffic capabilities, your GDL 50R feature set includes a built-in WAAS GPS receiver. This enables GDL 50R to deliver highly accurate aircraft position, speed and altitude information to your compatible mobile device app. Also, built-in attitude sensors enable select Garmin aviation portables and apps with our SVX synthetic vision technology to serve as a backup attitude reference4 during your flights. With virtual terrain, obstacles, runways, horizon cues, HSI, GPS speed, altitude and more, this brings a whole new perspective to your portable navigation.

Link up with the Benefits of ADS-B
For pilots who want subscription-free U.S. datalink weather and traffic, the remote GDL 50R receiver is one of the simplest and smartest ways to interface ADS-B weather and traffic with your G3X Touch avionics and more. And by going with Garmin, your receiver will be backed by a comprehensive 1-year warranty — and by the industry’s No. 1-ranked product support team.

    Reviews

Be aware that the GDL 50R PMA version is for use with the certified G3X Touch only. That is not really clear in the documentation but you cannot update the PMA versions firmware without the G3X installed so it is not sustainable to use longterm in an aircraft without the G3X. The device itself - 5 stars Garmin documentation and clarity (spent 2 hours on the phone to get this figured out)- 1 star

For its purpose (ADS-B In, AHARS), the unit works very well. Just beware that, unlike the portable version (which is less expensive), these dont include antennas or connectors, which adds even more expense. Its also a good amount larger, oddly enough. In hindsight, it would have been several hundred dollars less to have gone with a portable if I could have found a practical way to mount it. Given that this is remote mount, it would be really nice if Garmin made it a two-piece deal: one smaller part with the AHARS sensors (which have specific mounting requirements) connected to the remainder, which could be mounted elsewhere, possibly in view to see status lights.

Q: What is the PMA referred to in the review? Are the 50 portable and 50R the same device?

The PMA refers to the certified version of the GDL 50R. The part # for the certified version is 11-18239. The 50 and the 50R are the same unit, except the 50 is portable and typically used in the cockpit and the 50R is a remote mounted unit.

Q: The only difference between 52R and 50R is that 50R has no SIRIUSXM? Works with AERA 760?

That is correct. GDL 52R adds SiriusXM connectivity. Yes, this works with the Aera 760.

Q: What antenna do I need for this Garmin GDL 50R device to work? GPS? ADS-B? Do you have stock numbers/names for these antennas? It will be fitted to a Cessna 172 with Aera 796.

This unit has built in ADS-B and GPS receivers. It does not require external antennas.

Q: What approved data is available for installation on type certified aircraft(STC, etc.)?

For the certified version you will need 11-18239 and it carries a PMA.

Q: How is the GDL 50R powered?

A wiring harness must be fabricated to route power to the unit. Please review the Pilot guide for more information.

Q: Jonathan R wrote a review that, to me, says the GDL 50R wont work with anything other than the Garmin G3X. All the Garmin documents Ive read say it will work with my Garmin 796. Which is correct? I dont want to order this, install it, and it not work.

The certified version requires the G3X system. The Experimental version will work with other units such as the Aera 796.

Q: Can the GDl 50R connect to a GNC 355 and provide traffic and weather?

The manual for GNC 355 only calls out the GDL 82 or GDL 88 as compatible ADS-B devices.

Q: Does the GDL 50R work with the original G3X non touch GDU 370 and could replace the Garmin 20A for WAAS position source for approved ADSB position

No, the GDU370 will only work with the GDL 39/39R. The GDL 50/R works with the G3X touch, aera 660/795/796 and devices running Garmin Pilot.

Q: One comment states that the customer needed to purchase (Ed, Nov 20, 2020) an ADS-B antenna for installation of his GDL 50R, while one answer to a Question states the GDL 50R is equipped with internal GPS and ADS-B antennas. Which is correct when connecting to a GTX 335 and a G3x Touch?

External antennas are not required, they are optional. The unit has an internal antennas, for the customers review in question, they wanted the optional external antennas.
