Trio Autopilot

An affordable and dynamic combination of display and autopilot capability

Safety and precision that doesn't break the bank. Robust autopilot integration for certified aircraft with the Trio Pro Pilot autopilot and Aspen Avionics Evolution E5 and Evolution Pro MAX displays.

The Trio Pro Pilot is a two-axis digital autopilot designed for precise navigation and altitude control. It encompasses all the performance and safety features of Trio’s other systems and makes them available in a single, panel-mounted instrument. The combined autopilot and display system offers dynamic functionality.

Maximum stability and accuracy

The Trio Pro Pilot Autopilot is a fully-featured system that provides you with a list of workload-reducing and safety-enhancing features that were previously unavailable on aftermarket autopilots.

Together, the Aspen Evolution display system and Trio Pro Pilot Autopilot bring a new level of precision and safety to your cockpit. The feature-rich Evolution Flight Display system presents all your critical flight information in one, easy-to-read location for flying that is simpler… and safer.

System Benefits

  • Save workload: No multiple altimeter setting adjustments needed; engagement of autopilot functions are faster and simpler.
  • Upgrades your panel and improves instrument scan: Replaces separate monochrome displays, push buttons, and panel knobs with a full-color display directly in the pilot’s line of sight.

Key Features

  • Ability to select heading, course, corrected baro, and altitude on the PFD; vertical speed and airspeed are selected on the autopilot.
  • All autopilot annunciations are displayed in the pilot’s line of sight, reducing pilot scan.
  • Fully digital interface that eliminates the need for adapter boxes.

Autopilot Feature Integrations

  • Horizontal: Track with GPSS Heading/Course Intercept
  • Vertical: Altitude Hold Climb/Descent (AS/VS) Altitude Select
  • Safety: Auto Level Mode "Recover" Automatic 180 Turn Pilot Command Steering "PCS" Track Offset Capability Auto Servo Disconnect on takeoff
  • Approaches: RNAV approaches approved to 500 FT AGL.

Reviews

I installed the E5 in my 172k and have flown behind it for a year, really like the attitude indicator, easy to read. the DG is rock solid, havent used the HSI function but IFR behind this unit would be real nice i think. Lots of little features and upgrade options. Mounted the RSM on the upper tail cone just fwd of the ventral fin, like i said DG rock solid reliable.

Be aware (we found out the hard way) The ACU IS REQUIRED even for DIGITAL Autopilots like the Aerocruz if you want to use GPSS passthrough. What you lose without passthrough is the automatic altimeter updates and as of the new software release Feb,23 altitude selection from the E5 being forwarded to the AP. There is no good reason for it but Aspen doesnt see that this would work with a simple software change. So pony up the extra $$ or kill functionality and increase workload.

Q: Will it interface with a Stec-30 Autopilot? Will it interface with a Garmin GTN 650?

Per Aspen, the E5 will integrate with both the Stec-30 and the GTN 650.

Q: What do you mean by top or bottom mount on the Aspen Evolution E5?

When you install the RSM (Remote Sensor Module - Magnetometer), you have the option during time of order to mount externally on the top or bottom of the aircraft.

Q: What GPS input options for the Aspen Evolution E5 are there if a panel mounted source is not available?

Per the manufacturer, an IFR approved panel mounted GPS is needed. IFR GPS does not need to be WAAS.

Q: Will a kln-94 and/or a GX 65 appropriate GPS feeds for the Aspen E5?

Yes, an IFR approved panel mounted GPS (does not have to be WAAS)

Q: Does this Aspen E5 EFIS instrument have to be installed by a dealer in certified aircraft?

The E5 does not have to be installed by a dealer but does have to be installed by a A&P when being installed in a certified aircraft.

Q: Will my Garmin GTX 335 transponder with internal GPS, interface with the E5 to provide the GPS source?

No, as the GPS transponder is for ADS-B out, where Aspen requires an IFR panel mounted GPS source

Q: Can the WAAS GPS source for this Aspen E5 be from a LYNX transponder?

No. Per the manufacturer you will require an IFR GPS source such as a GNS430W or a GTN 650, etc.

Q: What does it mean by with or without ACU?

The ACU is an Analog Converter unit. This integrates the Aspen E5 older analog systems.

Q: Will it accept input from VOR receivers? How many?

Yes. It will accept one VOR source.

Q: When this Aspen E5 is put in a certified aircraft, what is the additional cost for the TSO version or is the E5 acceptable as is?

There is no added cost for it to be put in a certified aircraft. The E5 is a STC’d product. If interested, there is a version where you can upgrade to the PFD Pro Max, and that is TSO’d.
